Custom Orthotics
Custom orthotics are medical devices prescribed by a Chiropodist in order to support and align the feet, thereby helping to correct the individual’s unique biomechanical issues, foot pain, and improve overall mobility.
What Are Custom Orthotics?
Orthotics are designed to restore your foot to its ideal position, enabling the muscles to work more efficiently. This reduces stress on the ligaments and tendons and keeps joints congruent. This process of offloading high pressure areas is benefits the wearer by reducing arthritic pain, joint pain, and many other types of foot pain. Custom orthotics can be used to correct existing foot conditions, prevent existing conditions from progressing, and inhibit new conditions from developing.
High quality orthotics are manufactured based on a unique individual impression of the foot that is taken using a 3D laser or plaster. This impression captures the foot in its natural position, allowing the Chiropodist to ensure the orthotics are designed to address the biomechanical and structural problems that are distinctive to your feet. Orthotics should always be prescribed and dispensed by an Ontario licensed foot specialist such as a Chiropodist.
Custom foot orthotics are commonly used to treat a variety of conditions, including:
Flat or fallen arches
Plantar fasciitis
Heel pain
Hammer toes
Arthritic changes
Diabetic neuropathy
Sprain and strain in foot and ankle
Alignment issues
Limb length discrepancy
Corns and calluses
Why Choose Custom Orthotics?
Custom made orthotics aren’t just for runners or people with severe foot issues. Anyone with foot pain or discomfort can benefit! Custom orthotics address pain caused by an imbalance, change in the foot structure, or foot injuries. Further, people who walk or stand excessively at their workplace or people with a family history of foot problems can benefit from custom orthotics as a means of preventing conditions from developing.
Orthotic inserts are custom-made to the exact specifications prescribed by your chiropodist. They provide a custom fit and are comfortable to wear in your regular shoes, meaning you don’t have to worry about buying orthotic footwear.
Custom orthotics are also manufactured to last longer, reducing the waste caused by lower-quality over-the-counter options that have to be replaced more frequently.
FAQs
-
Most shoes can accommodate a custom orthotic, from running shoes, to work-boots and even high heels!
We do, however, recommend that patients discuss with the Chiropodist what footwear will be worn most frequently with your new orthotic inserts. It is also beneficial to bring along your most commonly worn pair of shoes when you come in to pick up your new orthotics. This way, the Chiropodist can ensure that the orthotics fit properly and comfortably in the shoe and that you are satisfied with your investment! If there are any concerns of discomfort, our Chiropodists will have recommendations and adjustments that can be made in-house to better suit your needs.

An initial orthotic assessment involves three main steps.
First, the Chiropodist will consult with you about:
Any foot problems you have been experiencing or have dealt with in the past,
If you have a family history of foot problems,
How often you are on your feet on average,
What type of shoes you wear most frequently
Next, the Chiropodist will perform a full biomechanical and gait analysis (Ie. An assessment of your feet and examination of how you walk).
Lastly, and most importantly, the Chiropodist will conduct a 3D scan of your feet using state-of-the-art Cryos digital casting technology.
